Color Trends

Modern Gray Interiors

Modern gray interiors sometimes get a bad rap as being cold, sterile and institutional.  No doubt some people are drawn to that steely gray with undertones of blue, but I’m not one who will ever be comfortable in a residential space that may be even remotely reminiscent of my 7th grade gym.   You don’t have to look far into my former blog posts to know that I actually love designing with grays, but I blend layers of gray tones, starting with something a little more complex and warm,  and then inviting shades of browns and tans to pepper the scene.  The result is much more dimensional and inviting.

The thing I like most about this color palette is that it is equally gorgeous in a very contemporary space, a shabby chic cottage, or a traditional living room.  And while most people assume the colors of nature to be greens, yellows and reds,  grays and tans are all around us in the natural world.

Subtle Shades Interior Color Trends

Who doesn’t love a man in saggy pants?!?!  Mmmm…mmm…The sight of a guy with a death grip on his crotch fabric – as a means of holding up his pants – is something few women can resist, am I right?  Absolutely one of the worst trends in history and one I firmly believe was started by some dude trying to conceal the fact that his butt is as shapely as a file folder.   No man with a nice assback or a teaspoon full of dignity would be caught dead in those things.  Let’s narrow it down a little further.  No “man” would be caught dead in them.

Close on the heels of the saggy pants are Shell Suits (those darlings of the R&B wannabes – matching polyester sweat suits often adorned with classy oversized gold chains), parachute pants, bedazzled Grills, and airbrushed t-shirts.

Hindsight really is 20/20.  I should be jailed for some of my own fashion foibles like the tube top, the mullet (originally called the bi-level), and gargantuan teased hair.

Too often when we talk about trends in design and fashion, the word trend becomes synonymous with fad.   A fad is like a mania or an eccentricity.   It’s a quick adoption of something that becomes all the rage overnight.  Like Clackers.  People rush in the direction of a fad when they see a celebrity endorsement without realizing that someone is already working on a blog for next season that will completely shame you for your choices.  And lucky you, we have the internet now so all of those really cool pics of you wearing your grill at your formal sorority dance are forever.

When we use the term color trend, we’re referring to a movement or a progression toward something.  Trends in design are usually introduced by a designer long before they trickle down to the masses.  As designers we try to give our clients something that feels innovative but also enduring so that the space has many years to age gracefully as the public catches up and catches on to the design trend.

So when I suggest color trends, I try to offer a fresh take on a color palette that will be stylish for years to come.

This week I’m going for softer shades create a relaxing tranquil environment.  All of these colors can be mixed and matched.

Black and White Interiors

Some of us can’t un-see the unfortunate 1980’s interior A-Bomb when we think of black and white interiors. Back then red and black was the hottest design concept for rock and roll buses, nightclub bathrooms, and Poconos sexy resort suites with heart shaped beds.  Consider what goes on in these environments and you’ll realize black and red were more functional that aesthetic.

So, gross.

Today black and white interiors are fighting back to overcome the shame.  And they’re winning.

Now you can use the color palette with almost every design style from Hollywood Regency to Casual and Shabby Chic, to Industrial to Uber Modern.    If you want to intensify the results, use Gold accents and lacquer finishes.   To soften the results, add some natural wood tones and relaxed linens.   Just back away from the red.  Future generations will thank you.

Home Design Inspiration Board – Green, Peach, Gray

Today’s home design inspiration board- green, peach, gray.

By now everyone who has followed my home design inspiration board knows that gray is my favorite neutral.  And I’m way more inspired by food than is probably healthy.   Gray is a really sophisticated neutral and it ranges in shades from steely, bluish  to warmer taupe.   And it works with everything.

So today I’m dreaming of Laduree macaroons in Pistachio and Coconut.  I swear I buy macaroons based on color palette.  I could be ordering Menudo or Chalkdust flavors for all I know.  My favorite part of the macaroon experience is the pretty box and then opening the pretty box to the beautiful sugar bomb inside.

Anyhoo,  these dreamy macaroons jumped off the screen at me.  Something about the soft Apple Blossom green and Bashful feels sophisticated but it works as well in a Glam living room as it does in a Shabby Chic bedroom.  These colors are more subtle and almost white washed so the combo is understated but still really elegant.   ‘Specially when you throw in some gray accents.
